Academic Honesty

Raising awareness and sustaining the importance of academic honesty is a vital part of the role of the DP Coordinator.

I regularly go through the Academic Honesty handout that I updated after becoming coordinator and can be found below, with staff and instruct them to make sure that students sign it every time they hand in an assessment.

The handout explains the IB`s definition of academic honesty and malpractice as well as highlighting the link with academic honesty and the IB Learner Profile. I have made this handout available to staff and it is signed by students in each subject every time they hand in an assessment.

By signing the form the students are confirming that they have followed the guidelines in the academic honesty guide.

It is a good idea to give the handout to staff, both on paper and soft copy and show them where it is on the shared area. I also go through this handout with students and parents to make sure they understand exactly what academic honesty is.

As well as the handout that student sign, I give them, and staff, access to the guide I created based on IB rules and regulations which can be also be found below. I go through the guide with the students at the start of the academic year and refer to it as the year progresses.

Staff training is a good time to highlight the International Baccalaureate`s Academic Honesty posters to staff, which are on show in the corridor and in DP classrooms, and remind them to regularly draw the students` attention to them.

As a school we use the Turnitin website as a way of checking for plagiarism. I have used staff workshops to go through the website using examples from the work my students have handed in and how to read the data the website provides.

New documents from the International Baccalaureate such as the one on Citing and Referencing need to be shown to staff, including where they can find it in staff shared area. I give a school context by focusing on the final page which explains what is required for the MLA referencing system which we use at our school.

It is important to keep Academic Honesty profile high with staff.

I regularly remind staff of their responsibilities in morning briefings and staff meetings. At the start of each term staff are reminded of their responsibilities in the Special Educational Needs policy shown below.

Student Academic Honesty Guide

This guide is for students. I go through it with the students at the start of the Diploma Programme and throughout the course.

I also go through this guide with teachers during meetings at the start of term to make sure they are aware of theirs, and the students’ responsibilities regarding academic honesty.
